Victim Assistance Program The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is responsible for investigating a wide range of Federal crimes. Part of the FBI’s work involves providing information and assistance to victims of those crimes. The FBI Victim Assistance Program has been established to assist victims who have suffered direct or threatened physical, emotional, psychological, or pecuniary harm as result of the commission of the crime. Each of the FBI‘s 56 field division has a Victim Specialist who can assist victims and coordinate with other agencies in providing support, information resources. In addition, in order to provide victim with information on case events, the Department of Justice has developed the Victim Notification System (VNS). VNS is a cooperative effort between the FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service, the United States Attorney’s office and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This free, computer-based system provides two important services to victims: information and notification. This information is available in English and Spanish.
