Community Outreach The mission of the FBI’s COP is to provide a comprehensive program that deals with multiple interrelated societal problems, including crime, drugs, gangs, and violence, in support of the FBI’s investigative mission. Linking community service, prevention, and law enforcement is a major national trend as grass roots efforts have brought about federal government support for public safety initiatives. FBI employees have joined in this national movement, volunteering in a wide variety of community-related efforts. Recognizing the interdependency of children, parents, other adults, community groups, businesses, schools, and social health service, the FBI focuses its community outreach efforts in three areas: the community, the schools, and the workplace. The following have been implemented within FBI Albany’s COP:
Adopt-A-School Program The Adopt-A-School Program initiative is part of the FBI’s COP. This program plays an important role providing positive law enforcement role model who will encourage student to excel in school performance and attendance, build their self-esteem, and teach them how to abstain from crime, drugs, gangs, and violence. FBI Albany adopts School 18 in Albany. During the school year, FBI employees serve as reading partners to students. Director’s Community Leadership Award The recipient of the Director’s Community Leadership Award 2003 was Captain Youth & Family Services. Captain is a grassroots community action group located in Saratoga County, New York. FBI Albany believes that Captain Youth Services was deserving of this award as they display notable contributions in working with youth in the community The 2004 DCLA will be presented in the immediate future. Teammates for Life Teammates for Life have been an ongoing anti-drug initiative since 1991. The events are sponsored by the Youth Educational Services Community Action Project (YESCAP), Senator Tom Libous, Lourdes, the Binghamton Meets and various media outlets. It is estimated that each year approximately 1000 kids/parents visit the FBI exhibit. Citizens’ Academy FBI Albany hosted third Citizens’ Academy in September 2004. The overall purpose of the academy was to establish and foster relationships and understanding between FBI Albany and its community.
